Terminology
A standardized set of terms used across the enquiry-to-jobsheet workflow.
| Enquiry | An Enquiry marks the first step of customer engagement, where a vehicle owner reaches out to the dealership or service center for information, appointment scheduling, or a service quote. For More details about the enquiry refer Enquiry |
| Jobsheet | A Jobsheet is created when a vehicle arrives at the service center and records the agreed scope of work between the customer and the service advisor. For More details about the jobsheet refer Jobsheet |
| Jobline | A Jobline denotes a distinct service operation listed within a jobsheet, representing a specific task to be carried out by entity or a labor activity executed by a technician. For More details about the jobline refer Jobline |
| Jobline Description | A Jobline Description gives a short overview of the task to be performed and is often classified as below

Technically, the Enquiry acts as the parent record, and the Jobsheet is its child record, representing the actual execution of the requested service.
What is a Jobline Description?
A jobline description defines what work is being done, why it is being done, and occasionally how it will be done — all within the operational limits of a single service action.
It serves as:
- The visible description of labor on the customer invoice
- A technical identifier for internal reference and tracking
- The linguistic bridge between customer, technician, and billing system
Characteristics of a Good Jobline Description
A well-written jobline description exhibits the following characteristics:
| Characteristic | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | Uses simple, understandable wording | "Replace front brake pads" |
| Specific | Mentions exact component or system | "Clean throttle body" instead of "Engine cleaning" |
| Concise | A single line description | "Replace air filter element" |
| Standardized | Matches OEM labor library phrasing when available | "Lubricate door hinges (LBR-215)" |
Purpose and Benefits
What it does:
- Acts as the linguistic bridge between customer, technician, and billing system
- Ensures clarity, accountability, and technical accuracy
- Prevents billing disputes and supports warranty/warranty claim justification
If someone reads the jobline 6 months later and understands exactly what was done — the description was perfect.
